Here's what you need to know...
Some common fruits and vegetables are poisonous when taken rawOne of the main benefits of slow juicing is that it helps your body to better absorb the nutrients from fruits and vegetables. Unfortunately, the adverse is also true, and harmful effects will also be more apparent. Therefore, people suffering from iodine deficiency or thyroid problems should avoid juicing raw cruciferous vegetables (commonly used cruciferous vegetables used in slow juicing would be broccoli, cauliflower and even kale). Avoid being lazy and juicing apples whole, as the seeds need to be removed first. Apple seeds produce cyanide when digested. Sure, it takes 200 apple seeds to kill a 70kg man in one go, but would you still want to be taking them? Some parts of fruits and vegetables you would normally discard are actually very nutritiousAlternatively, you can go ahead and slow juice parts of the fruit/vegetable which you wouldn't normally eat. Not only is this normally more nutritious, but it's also more convenient as you don't have to bother with peeling. So go ahead and chuck in lemons, oranges, avocados, etc with the skin on. Most seeds (lemon, oranges, NOT apple) will also be harmless if not beneficial. Note that this will, of course, effect the taste of your juice. Try to use more dark, leafy vegetables and limit using fruitsUpon getting your first slow juicer, you'll likely Google "slow juicer recipes" and "healthy raw fruits and vegetables".
The recipes will give you boring things like "Carrot juice - slow juice 5 carrots and 1 lemon", "Cucumber juice - slow juicer 3 cucumbers and 1 lemon"; you get the idea. Meanwhile "healthy raw fruits and vegetables" will give you things you've never even heard of. The average guy has no idea what a collard, or kale, or chard even is, much less looks like in the grocery store. Don't worry too much when you're just starting out slow juicing. How do you go about choosing the best slow juicer for your needs? Not only are there so many brands of slow juicers to choose from, but each of these brands also carry several different models. Even the same model can come in different generations, and even the exact same generation model can come with different warranty and payment options!
Therefore, before you begin the process of choosing a slow juicer, you need to actually know what your exact selection criteria is. From there, you can narrow down your choices to make your decision easier. Step number one, is to know what is your price range? Most brands will have a range of models, from entry level models to more luxurious models. As a rule of thumb, more famous brands will cost more, as they have a better reputation and offer better servicing and warranties. Newer generation slow juicers will also cost more, as they offer improvements such as parts which last longer, less jamming and better juice yield. A higher end slow juicer will be RM3,000 and above. A medium range slow juicer will cost around RM2,000 and above. Meanwhile, entry level slow juicers can cost around RM1,000. There are slow juicers available for as cheap as RM600, but you get what you pay for. It is possible to get discounts, for example at promotion booths or by buying online. Do be careful though if you see a model being sold at a big discount. Check what the warranty period is compared to in a store (0 years instead of 10 years?), what parts the warranty covers (Just the motor? How about the casing, or any of the removable parts?), what generation model it is, etc Once you've figured out what your budget is, you can actually move on to what features you would like your slow juicer to have. Some options to consider: i) Horizontal or vertical. Newer generation models tend to have a vertical feeding mechanism. What this means is you can just chuck in ingredients from the top, and gravity will do most of the work. A horizontal feeding mechanism requires you to push ingredients in manually. Horizontal units also tend to take up more space on your counter top. ii) Self cleaning. No, you can't just push a button and have your slow juicer clean and store itself. Self cleaning means if you wish to change the flavour of your juice (i.e switch from making tomato juice to lemon juice), just pour water into the slow juicer and it will flush out the first juice. iii) Size of feed chute. The bigger the feed chute, the less you'll have to chop up fruit and vegetables before putting them in. Some slow juicers even allow you to put the whole fruit in at once. Take note though some fruit and vegetables contain poisonous parts, i.e. apple seeds, raw broccoli/cauliflower. Physical meaning you can actually go and see the Hurom Slow Juicer in person, rather than just depending on online pictures and videos before you invest a few thousand RM on a Hurom Slow Juicer.
